Ethel Merhaut & Band
sweet & bitter
Seebühne am Biedermeierstrand Hayna
The hits of the time from Babylon Berlin
Around 1930, operetta, cabaret, pop revues and the new world of radio and film music merged to create a unique soundscape. Foxtrot, tango and waltz set the pace and created a musical melting pot full of joie de vivre - but also melancholy.
Ethel Merhaut's programme combines the German-language popular music of this period with songs interpreted or newly created by emigrant artists in the USA. A special focus is on the repertoire of the singer Greta Keller and the successes of the Comedian Harmonists, whose timeless hits shine in new splendour here.
Each song tells a story, often closely linked to the fate of its composers and performers.
"Sweet & Bitter" captures the vitality and complexity of this music, but also recalls the challenges and tragedies experienced by many artists of the time.
Instrumentation:
Ethel Merhaut | vocals
Belush Korenyi | piano
