About

At first glance, religion hardly plays a role in Saxony. Less than 20 per cent of people in the Free State belong to the Protestant or Catholic Church. However, existing and new religious and cultural communities have grown since 1990 - due to immigration from West Germany and abroad. Personal faith is important to many residents of Saxony. The exhibition "Visible Diversity. Religions in Saxony" provides examples of the religious and cultural diversity in Saxony.

The exhibition consists of two parts:
A travelling exhibition that presents eight portraits on free-standing, illuminated steles with photos and introductory texts and has been on mobile display in Saxony since July 2024.
A digital exhibition with in-depth content: Photos, texts as well as video interviews and didactic material for schools and educational institutes on the website religionen-in-sachsen.slpb.de

Contents

The focus is on individual faith. For religious people, faith is fundamental to their identity and social interaction. The method of biographical encounters enables easy access to the religious communities.

Eight religious communities are portrayed:
• the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church Dresden
• the Polish Catholic Mission Dresden-Bautzen
• the Protestant parish of Schleife / Slepo
• the Jewish Community Chemnitz
• the Ahmadiyya Community Zwickau
• the Islamic Cultural Centre of the Bosniaks in Leipzig e.V.
• the Vietnamese-Buddhist Community Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel
• the Indian Association Dresden e.V.

Schools, educational institutions, local authorities and administrations can request the travelling exhibition and display it in their institution for a period of up to four weeks. Didactic material and suitable publications on the subject of religions can also be ordered from the SLpB.

About the organiser

The topics covered by the State Centre for Political Education are as diverse as Germany's past and present. From the Wettin people to National Socialism and the peaceful revolution to current social debates: with its numerous formats, both online and on-site, the State Centre for Political Education offers the Saxon public a broad platform for engaging in dialogue with those responsible and experts. It provides knowledge and in this way promotes political participation, judgement and the ability to act. The aim is to support and strengthen a politically interested, well-informed, opinionated, open-minded and committed civil society in the Free State.
