In the summer of 1846, opera history was written in the village of Graupa near Dresden. A three-month summer holiday brought Richard Wagner, Kapellmeister at the Royal Court Theatre in Dresden, now the Semperoper, to Graupa.

The colour scheme of the museum in blue and purple tones is also atmospheric, indicating that Wagner was a highly emotional, lively man of the theatre.

In terms of content, the presentation focuses on the Saxon years up to 1849 - Wagner's childhood, youth and school years as well as his years as Kapellmeister in Dresden. Later stages of his life and the impact of his work up to the present day are also highlighted.

Permanent exhibition in the Lohengrinhaus Graupa

On the initiative of Max Gaßmeyer, a grammar school teacher from Leipzig, two museum rooms were set up in the Schäfer farmhouse, the ‘Lohengrinhaus’, in 1907 to commemorate the stay of the town's most famous guest to this day. It is the oldest authentic Wagner residence that is still used as a museum. Today, the reconstructed living quarters and an exhibition on the history of the creation and reception of the opera ‘Lohengrin’ can be experienced here. Audio stations and information boards in German, English and Czech provide information about Richard Wagner's stay in Graupa.
