Museum Natural History Cabinet Waldenburg
One of the last natural history cabinets in Europe
The year 2025 heralds a major festive phase for the Museum Naturalienkabinett Waldenburg: 180 years ago, it was built as part of the former residence of the Princes of Schönburg-Waldenburg in an ensemble of palace, stables and (now demolished) riding hall with adjoining princely parks. Almost unchanged since then, the second floor of the museum houses the Historical Natural History Cabinet, a unique historical ensemble of six cabinets with overflowing original display cases. The Art and Natural History Cabinet of the Leipzig apothecary family Linck, founded in 1670, is an internationally significant jewel that provides an insight into the development of the natural sciences and humanities in the Baroque and Enlightenment periods. As one of the last surviving cabinets of curiosities from the 17th and 18th centuries, this collection is presented, researched and communicated to visitors in an authentic atmosphere. Until 1945, the collection was supplemented under the Waldenburg princes with special natural history collections and ethnographica.
