“Jewish Welfare Office” and the Site of its Re-establishment
Siegbert Fechenbach’s apartment, located in the Ebersdorf district, served in September 1945 as the venue for the re-establishment of the Jewish community. It soon became—as Fechenbach termed it—a "Jewish Support Center" and the primary point of contact for returning survivors.
Siegbert Fechenbach and his wife, Anna, had been residing on the upper floor of the house since June 1945; on the ground floor, they had set up a prayer room.
Until May 1949, Fechenbach’s private residence remained the official address of the Jewish Community of Chemnitz. This situation remained unchanged even after the community was recognized as a public corporation by the Saxon state government in March 1947.
