Maximilian Holderer

Uncertain fate

* 21 April 1895 in Wuppertal-Elberfeld
✡ date of death unknown

Life and Work

Not much is known about Maximilian Holderer’s early life. He was born on 21 April 1895 in Wuppertal-Elberfeld and later worked as a mechanic in Chemnitz.

Life under National Socialism

During the Nazi era, Maximilian Holderer was deported to a concentration camp, from which he was most likely liberated.

Back in Chemnitz

Maximilian must have returned to Chemnitz shortly after his release from the concentration camp. There he lived at 50 Matthesstraße (Schloßchemnitz). On 7 September 1945, he became a founding member of the Jewish Community of Chemnitz.

According to the register of ‘Those Returned from the Nazi Concentration Camps’ dated 10 April 1946, Maximilian Holderer was working as a grocer. He subsequently moved away – to where is unknown. His subsequent fate also remains unclear. A directory for the town of Siegen lists a mechanic named Maximilian Holderer in 1956. Whether this is the same person remains uncertain.

Maximilian Holderer is a striking example of how, even eighty years after the war, much remains unknown.
