In this workshop, anyone interested (particularly members of civil society) will have the opportunity to learn about the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles, ‘Sukkot’, and to organise their own celebrations in their local communities. The Festival of Tabernacles commemorates the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt 3,000 years ago and the hardships they endured during their long journey through the desert with few possessions. Together we will build a sukkah, eat traditional Sukkot dishes, sing Jewish songs and dance to them. Last but not least, we will discuss themes associated with this festival: the values that guide us on our journey, gratitude for nature’s bounty, and community despite our differences.
A Jewish person will be present at the workshop to share their perspective on the festival. Workshop participants can then celebrate Sukkot themselves in their own communities, whether in an allotment association, a neighbourhood centre or a church congregation.

About the organiser
The rich musical heritage of Leipzig and Saxony includes the culture of its Jewish inhabitants, whose contribution is only barely present in the memory of the citizens, especially due to the National Socialist expulsion. The aim of the Leipziger Notenspur is to give this lost heritage a "home" in our region again by "localising" it and thus bringing it back into the cultural memory of our city and the Free State. With this in mind, the "Jewish Music Trails" project focuses on communicating regional Jewish musical heritage to children, citizens and visitors to the city of Leipzig and the Free State as a whole - as interactively, sensually and closely linked as possible to former locations and buildings that tell the story of Jewish cultural history.
