Following Jewish traces in Meissen
city tour
Heinrichplatz
Meissen looks back on a long Jewish history. The first mentions of Jews date back to the beginning of the 11th century. Street names such as "Jüdenberg" still refer to the medieval Jewish population today. Crusades, accusations of ritual murder, expulsions, pogroms and finally the Holocaust led to the decimation and ultimately the destruction of Jewish life. Today, only a few traces of Jewish life remain visible, in particular the remains of medieval Hebrew gravestones. We want to search for traces between Heinrichsplatz, Markt, Görnischer Gasse, Neumarkt and Plossen and remember the fates of Meissen's Jews.
Meeting point: Heinrichsplatz in front of the Meissen City Museum
End: approx. 4:30–5:00 p.m.
Participation is free of charge.
Note: Some headlamps and torches are available – but please bring your own if possible. The lamps are important, as we will also be spending some time in unlit cellars.
